ABOUT CCTA

The Chittenden County Transportation Authority (CCTA) was chartered in 1973 by the Vermont General Assembly, after Burlington Rapid Transit, a private bus contractor, went out of business. CCTA serves the communities of Burlington, Essex, South Burlington, Shelburne, Williston, Winooski, Milton, and a portion of Colchester.  LINK Express routes service Montpelier, Middlebury, and St. Albans commuters.  CCTA is considered a municipality and is the first and only transit authority in the State of Vermont.

About CCTAOur Mission
The mission of CCTA is to promote and operate safe, convenient, accessible, innovative and sustainable public transportation services in the northwest and central Vermont region that reduce congestion and pollution, encourage transit oriented development and enhance the quality of life for all.

CCTA Services
CCTA offers fixed route, demand response, commuter shuttles, and ADA and paratransit services. CCTA provides shuttles from senior housing complexes to local supermarkets and neighborhood specials for student transportation to Burlington schools.

In compliance with the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act, CCTA also provides transportation services for those who are unable to use bus service. Through a contract with the Special Services Transportation Agency (SSTA), van service is provided within a three-quarter mile radius of the CCTA fixed route service area. In FY 2007, SSTA provided almost 36,000 rides to people who could not use the fixed route bus service.

LINK ExpressCCTA also provides commuter routes linking Burlington to suburban counties. The Montpelier LINK Express began in the fall of 2003, the Middlebury LINK Express began in the fall of 2004 and the St. Albans LINK Express started in the fall of 2005. All LINK routes operate Monday through Friday at peak commuting times to provide access to employment for commuters.

CCTA is currently governed by a fourteen member Board of Commissioners with two Commissioners each representing Burlington, Essex, Hinesburg, Shelburne, South Burlington, Milton, Williston and Winooski.

In the spring of 2003, CCTA received authority from the Vermont General Assembly to operate outside of Chittenden County (in Washington County and between Franklin and Chittenden Counties). CCTA began public transportation operation in central Vermont as Green Mountain Transit Agency (GMTA). For GMTA route and schedule information, please log onto www.gmtaride.org.
